The Process EKG Certification
If you want to know more about EKG certification and its standards vary from country to country. In the United States, most state laws require that EKG technicians be certified before they can take an exam for licensure at the American EKG Association or AETNA. States that do not have these laws generally have no laws at all pertaining to the certification of EKG technicians. For individuals working in the healthcare industry, this certification will not ensure job placement or increased earning potential, but it can help individuals land jobs with higher salaries. Individuals without this certification are not likely to be given the same promotions or job opportunities offered to those with full-blown EKG certificates.
For those individuals who currently work in the healthcare industry but do not have a degree or education in cardiology or cardiovascular technology, there is an option for them to obtain a certification through an external training program. These programs are often conducted by EKG associations or hospitals that hire individuals on a trial basis. Often times, EKG technicians are employed by medical practices or hospitals where they are responsible for administering and interpreting EKG equipment. Some clinics and hospitals have been licensed by their EKG association and participate in an external training program. This external training program can help to determine which EKG technicians possess the necessary knowledge and training to administer and interpret EKG equipment. Once these technicians have successfully completed the training program, they can apply for certification at their own discretion.
Before applying for EKG certification, potential candidates need to demonstrate that they have the necessary experience and knowledge necessary for the EKG technician position. Generally, technicians must accumulate twenty hours of approved lab or clinical practice for their certification exam. Once the candidate has passed the exam, they will receive a certificate that shows proof that they possess the knowledge and skill needed to effectively perform their job. These certificates are valid for two years or four years depending on the location where you reside.
